1949: Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen & Henry P. Glass Hairpin leg side table.

Too often we associate mid-century modern furnishings only with the 1950's and 1960's, but the origins start earlier than that. Recently I came across an advertisement in a magazine from 1949 that shows the remarkable Womb hair by Eero Saarinen.

A textile manufacturer's advertisement for Spring 1949 used modern aspects to emphasize a specific fashion fabric.  The photo stylist selected the Womb chair designed in 1946 by Eero Saarinen and a side table whose hair pin legs were probably designed by Henry P. Glass in 1941.

This forecast was published early 1949 in the textile industry publication: "American Fabrics"  It is the ninth issue of this quarterly magazine that started after the war.  It featured both fashion and home decor textile designs and technical information for the industry.

This advertisement was created for a product called Jacqueline jacquard faille by the Verney Fabrics Corp. NY. I have featured more advertisements from this issue showing fashion, and textile designs on my other blog, Pintucks, that may interest anyone looking for 1940s styles.
